RedNotebook, as its name so adequately points out, is a journal or diary application. As you would expect from an application of this sort, you can use it to put down your thoughts, play with the formatting, include images and links, and keep everything nicely organized on a per-day basis. And speaking about keeping things organized, it must be mentioned that RedNotebook has something in common with Twitter – tag things using hashtags.

RedNotebook is available for multiple platforms: Windows, Mac OS X, and various Linux-based distros. The installation file for Windows weighs in at little over 18MB. Download this file, run it, and you will be presented with a setup wizard; click through this setup wizard and moments later you will be done with the installation process and you’ll be able to start using RedNotebook.

The application’s interface is divided into several sections. In the upper right hand corner you have a calendar. Below it there’s a window that shows tags and words. The main part of the interface is taken up by a pane that displays the text you enter – when you run RedNotebook for the first time, this section will be filled with some sample text. And to the right you have a section that displays and allows you to add tags.

RedNotebook features two modes: edit and preview. In edit mode you can add text, edit existing text, add a template, insert a link, file, image and so on, and play with the text formatting. In the preview mode you get to see whatever you enter into the journal. So use edit mode to write down your thoughts and use preview mode to read whatever you write down.

You never know when a data loss accident could occur. That is why RedNotebook automatically saves your data when you exit the application and at regular intervals of time. Just in case this is not enough, you can manually back up your journal.

RedNotebook is a free application. To keep the development of this application going, consider making a donation.

Keeping a journal and putting your thoughts in order is a piece of cake with the free RedNotebook application.

Pros

RedNotebook is available for multiple platforms. Takes little time to get it up and running on Windows. You can adjust the text formatting, select templates, include links and images, and more. Use hashtags just like you would on Twitter. RedNotebook is freeware.

Cons

There is no option to password protect access to the application.
